Carrier Transicold UK Secures Major Order from Culina

22 June 2015

WARRINGTON, England, June 22, 2015 - Food and drink supply chain specialist Culina has ordered 83 Vector™ 1550 trailer refrigeration units from Carrier Transicold UK as part of its 2015 fleet investment strategy. Carrier Transicold , which operates in the UK as Carrier Transicold UK, helps improve global transport and shipping temperature control with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a part of UTC Building & Industrial Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

The new Carrier Transicold units are being mounted onto a mix of Montracon and Gray & Adams trailers, including 73 standard length 13.6 metre trailers and ten 14.6 metre Longer Semi-Trailers (LSTs). The LSTs will be part of the UK Department for Transport’s (DfT) trial of longer articulated goods vehicles, allowing Culina to increase load capacity and efficiency on selected routes.

The new trailers will be used to deliver temperature-sensitive goods from food manufacturers to retailers, distribution outlets and regional distribution centres, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, only stopping for a few hours on Christmas Day.

“Our fleet is on the road 365 days a year, so we’re focused on eliminating unexpected fleet downtime altogether,” said Mark Matkin, group fleet manager, Culina. “In the rare event that we do have a problem with one of our units, it’s paramount that we get it fixed and back on the road as soon as possible.

“The support offered by Carrier’s service partner network was one of the main reasons we chose Carrier Transicold,” added Matkin. “Also key to securing this order was the proven performance of the Vector 1550 units.”

The Vector units are covered by an eight-year everCOLD™ service, maintenance and repair contract. This includes all maintenance recommended by Carrier Transicold and carried out by Carrier-trained F-Gas certified engineers using genuine Carrier Transicold Performance Parts™. It also gives Culina 24/7 access to Carrier’s new oneCALL™ emergency assistance service.

Each Vector 1550 unit combines an efficient 1.5 litre diesel engine with Carrier’s patented E-Drive™ technology and an economiser to deliver a low total cost of ownership. Overall, carbon dioxide emissions are reduced by up to 39 per cent compared to conventional systems – the equivalent of removing 5.8 tonnes of CO2 per unit per year – whilst delivering a balanced capacity of 14,700 watts.

The Carrier Transicold units are able to integrate with Culina’s fleet telematics solution, providing the customer with access to temperature-critical information at any point in the journey.

Founded in 1994, Culina provides shared-user logistics services, including warehousing and distribution, from 17 sites across the UK and Ireland. The company runs a fleet of more than 1,000 trucks, vans and trailers, with approximately 70 per cent of its temperature controlled assets featuring Carrier Transicold refrigeration equipment.
