Carrier Transicold Launches Engineless Supra™ City Z Unit for Trucks

28 October 2011

Carrier Transicold’s new Supra™ City Z (Zero Engine) refrigeration unit for trucks eliminates the diesel engine within the unit to significantly reduce emissions and noise levels, while delivering constant refrigeration capacity even at idle speed. Carrier Transicold helps improve global transport and shipping temperature control with a complete line of equipment for refrigerated trucks, trailers and containers, and is a part of UTC Climate, Controls & Security Systems, a unit of United Technologies Corp.

Carrier Transicold designed the Supra City Z unit to meet the needs of operators that distribute temperature-sensitive goods in urban or Low Emission Zones, and who are eager to reduce their environmental impact without compromising on cold chain protection. The engineless unit is the latest addition to Carrier Transicold’s growing “City” range of best-of-breed, environmentally-friendly solutions developed for eco-responsible transport professionals. The City range also includes the piek-certified Vector 1550 City and Vector 1850 City units.

“Our customers increasingly look to invest in solutions with strong environmental benefits while continuing to ensure cold chain protection and food safety standards as a top priority,” said David Appel, president, Carrier Transicold. “The Supra City Z unit is a result of listening to customers to develop a unit that leverages the reliability of the standard Supra unit while offering improved environmental performance.”

By removing the diesel engine, the Supra City Z unit derives its power from a hydraulic pump directly connected to the truck engine’s Power Take Off (PTO) to drive a hydraulic engine placed inside the refrigeration unit. This allows for transmission of mechanical force through the hydraulic fluid system and for energy from the truck engine to be converted into a steady supply of power that drives the refrigeration system. Variable displacement technology, in the form of an oil pump combined with an electronic controller to regulate the hydraulic engine, allows the Supra City Z unit to deliver high and constant cooling capacity regardless of truck engine speed.

Relying on the Euro 5-compliant truck engine for power, the Supra City Z unit helps to significantly reduce emissions of nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons, and particulate matter. Using a hydraulic engine also eliminates the primary source of noise from the refrigeration system.

The Supra City Z unit integrates the insulation equipment from the Supra “Silent” version, thereby reducing noise levels to 62 dB in stand-by mode. It is available in multi-temperature configuration, providing wide flexibility for multi-product deliveries.

“The Supra City Z unit extends environmental benefits to the Supra range’s proven reliability and performance, which offers enhanced product protection and lower operating costs as a result of extended unit life and reduced downtime,” said Lionel Pourcheresse, product manager, Carrier Transicold.

The Supra City Z unit is able to optimise Carrier Transicold’s DataCold™ performance tracking system to independently record temperature in compliance with European Union legislation. Additionally, Carrier’s Foretrack™ telematics solution enables operators to optimise fleet management and cold chain monitoring remotely and in real time via GPS/GPRS technology. The customer receives information on truck temperatures, refrigeration unit performance and vehicle location via email, SMS alerts or through the Web. The Supra City Z unit is backed by Carrier Transicold’s extensive, reliable after-sales network, which contributes to delivering maximum operational efficiency while helping customers meet the business demands of the highly competitive refrigerated transport sector. Carrier Transicold’s European network is composed of more than 550 service points with 1,700 fully-trained technicians proficient in the installation, maintenance and repair of all Carrier Transicold refrigeration products. A multi-lingual call center provides customers with 24-hour assistance in 17 languages.

“As with any Carrier Transicold product, our customers have the comfort of knowing that support will always be at hand should it be needed,” said Johan Duysters, EMEA aftermarket director, Carrier Transicold. “We pride ourselves on the efficiency and responsiveness of our teams, who can quickly be on site anywhere in the region to help protect the valuable or perishable goods that our customers transport.”

The Supra City Z unit is available now in three sizes: the Supra City Z 900 (9,020 watts), Supra City Z 1000 (11,100 watts) and Supra City Z 1000 MT (11,100 watts, multi-temperature) for a load capacity of up to 19 tonnes.
